The Verdict Is In: Alberta Independence Is Massive

The verdict is in, even though the signatures have hardly started.
Tens of thousands of Albertans are already lined up on snowy sidewalks in frigid temperatures to sign the referendum for independence.
If it wasn’t clear to Ottawa before, it had better be clear now. Alberta independence isn’t a small-fringe minority movement. Alberta independence is a train.
The movement started slowly. While most Albertans went about their working days, a few passionate patriots fed the furnace and opened the throttle to get the great behemoth moving.
From there, Ottawa did most of the work.
As Parliament passed an increasing number of outrageous policies, all while arrogantly rejecting Alberta’s pleas for reform, the movement steadily gained momentum and power until it achieved the magnificent pace it’s roaring at today.
And this train is carrying the cargo of millions of grievances against Ottawa, most of which have been entirely unheard until now.
For the past many decades, Ottawa dismissed almost all (if not all) of Alberta’s concerns. Every letter we sent received a silent reply. Every time we knocked on Ottawa’s door, we noticed the lights were off and the blinds were closed. There was nobody home.
For federalists in the east, this strategy worked for a little while. While they neglected Alberta, everything seemed politically manageable, for when the train is far off, there’s no need to worry about clearing the tracks.
But now the train is close and Ottawa’s bureaucrats have run out of time.
They’ve denied reality for so long that they failed to realize it’s impossible to deny reality forever. The train is moving too fast to stop, and it certainly has no intention of stopping.
After all, there comes a point when all of the excuses and deflections are rendered entirely ineffective. “Just wait for another government in Ottawa” is no longer an option for us. It hasn’t been an option for some time. The Canadian problem isn’t just governmental, but foundational.
No matter who’s in Ottawa, Alberta’s going to be neglected. The confederation is designed with a single purpose in mind: eastern supremacy at the expense of the west.
So why should we keep tinkering with something that’s structurally flawed? Why fight to stay in a place that will never accept Albertans for who they naturally are?
The southern situation only escalated Alberta’s urgency. The province is at a fulcrum in its history, for it has the opportunity to achieve what no province has ever achieved before and sing a new anthem, write a new constitution, and fly and new flag.
