Progressives Say MAiD Is Humane. Here's Why They're Wrong.

Progressives believe euthanasia is humane. Here’s why they’re wrong.

1. Suffering

The Liberal Government promotes euthanasia because it ceases unbearable suffering, but who decides what “unbearable” actually means? In fact, the deeper we plunge into this euthanasia dystopia, the more we realize “unbearable” is a meaningless term. Euthanasia’s not a tool to end unbearable suffering; euthanasia’s a tool to end suffering.

But is there anyone on Earth who doesn’t suffer? Didn’t the Son of God, Himself, suffer? Everyone suffers, and everyone suffers terminally. And, if a man doesn't suffer physically, he suffers mentally, spiritually, romantically, emotionally, or some combination of all five. A child suffers when no one invites him to a birthday party. A son suffers when his parents break an unbreakable bond and divorce. A man suffers when he can’t feed his family, and his wife suffers from chronic arthritis. An old man suffers from the regret of his past; a young man suffers from a fear for his future.

And yet, though all men suffer until they die, their lives aren’t meaningless or devalued. A poor man freezing in the cold is as valuable as a billionaire. The apostle knew this better than all in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10:

But he [Christ] said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2. Life is no Longer Worth Living

I am utterly hostile to the view that life is no longer worth living at some point in time. The view's foolishness is that life's value is somehow contingent on experience and degree of comfort.

It’s not.

Life is infinitely valuable and, thus, is valuable regardless of circumstance or mental condition. The horror of euthanasia is that it really does believe there comes a time when life is no longer worth living. Thus, the Liberal Government realizes the prophecy of Chesterton and drags us into an era where murderers are given medals for ending a man’s life.*

3. Choice

Arguing for euthanasia because it promotes free choice is a hideous perversion of our freedom to choose. If we justify the murder of self (which is what euthanasia is) on the grounds that it manifests our freedom of choice, then all choices must be permitted in all realities. This must be the case, not because all actions are ethical, but because our actions are a product of choice.

Of course, if choice is our standard of right and wrong, it makes no difference whether you choose to murder your fiancé or marry him. Because both choices are exactly that—choices—both choices become equally moral. Terms like “right and wrong, good and evil, murder and life” are sucked into a void without meaning. What we choose to do, we don’t really care.

You cannot argue that euthanasia is exempt from this law because it harms no one else. Of course euthanasia harms others. It harms friends, family, mothers, fathers, sons, and siblings, to the point of debilitating sadness, sickness, stress, and perhaps death itself.

Even if euthanasia didn’t harm others, does it therefore follow that euthanasia is moral? Of course not. Is self-harm moral? Is anorexia moral? Do doctors encourage their patients to partake in such things? Does our Government encourage citizens to participate in such tragic cruelty? I fear any man who has the audacity to ask Canada’s Federal Cabinet, for those Ministers might respond, “Why do you want to know? Are you suffering mentally? Here, consider killing yourself.”

At any rate, it’s abundantly clear that those who promote euthanasia on the grounds of free choice are really promoting the euthanasia of choice itself. Activists eat themselves alive as the “pro-choice” world they so fervently pursue turns out to be one where no one has any choice at all. You cannot argue for euthanasia on the grounds of choice; in his suicide, euthanasia takes away a man’s right on this Earth to choose, forever.

And do not be deceived. Right now, the Government says, “Choose to kill yourself.” It won’t be long until they tell us, “We’ve chosen for you.”

MAiD is reprehensible, and so are the Members of Parliament who endorse it. This program shows us what the Government thinks of its people. They see us as “(Un)Willing slaves of the Welfare State”** to be worked as an engine for the great government machine until we’ve worn out our welcome and are ready to be disposed of in a dumpster.
